Raid Release Dates - A historical look at how long it takes Blizzard to release content from a Raider Perspective
Big news today, with Legion being announced for August 30th. Now, we've been here before. Feels like the longest wait ever, right? It always feels that way at the end of the expansion. Well I decided to check Wowpedia and do the math!

If they hold to an August 30th release date, it will be the longest wait without a raid patch ever.
Tier Comparison
Expansion | Tier | Weeks | Tier | Weeks | Tier | Weeks | Tier | Weeks |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Vanilla | 1 | 0 | 2 | 35 | 3 | 49 | ||
Burning Crusade | 4 | 30 | 5 | 0 | 6 | 18 | ||
Wrath | 7 | 77 | 8 | 22 | 9 | 16 | 10 | 18 |
Cataclysm | 11 | 52 | 12 | 29 | 13 | 22 | ||
Mists | 14 | 43 | 15 | 23 | 16 | 27 | ||
Warlords | 17 | 73 | 18 | 20 |
Methodology:
All patch dates are from Wowpedia, except for release dates which are from Google. Weeks are the number of weeks since the previous raid released, as calculated in Excel, with the formula (Date 1 - Date 2) / 7, and rounded. This is slanted through the lense of a raider, only raider content was counted, sorry. I also skipped Onyxia & MC re-releases, they would've skewed the numbers.
Also, this ignores the fact that the raids are rarely available on actual release date for expansion launches, I didn't feel like tracking down the actual day each instance opened. It's a best guess estimate!
What's interesting is that this lull is entirely standard and getting worse each expansion despite them saying it'll be better each time.
The expansions clock in at:
- Legion - 62 Weeks
- Warlords - 61 Weeks
- Mists - 43 Weeks
- Wrath - 37 Weeks
- Burning Crusade - 30 Weeks
- Cataclysm - 24 Weeks (would've clocked in at 52 weeks if they hadn't released Ruby Sanctum)
Raiding isn't the end all be all of the game, and I'm not trying to condemn Blizzard. I've seen this topic bandied about a lot, so I thought I'd compile some numbers for a change.
Update 1: Moved Mount Hyjal to sit with Black Temple to reflect when it was actually accessible.
Update 2: Added Tier Comparison
